AFG teams up to form new football ‘ability’ team

Alternative Futures Group (AFG) Tameside staff Sean McCarron and James Paul have been instrumental in joining up with Stalybridge Celtic foundation to form Stalybridge Celtic AFG.

With the benefit of £1000 of start-up money secured by  AFG Team Leader Andrea Doherty, it’s seen as the up and coming learning disability football team in the area.

Andrea said: “This is a fantastic opportunity because it promotes amongst other things health and well-being, inclusion and building better relationships with peers.”

The team trains twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays) and plays its matches at Aquinas college, Stockport. It has its own amazing website, featuring pictures of the week and videos, created by service user Nathan Hoyle from Somerset house. He also created their Facebook and Twitter pages, and attends and records every match and training session.

Their website reads: “We are a learning disability team. The key word is ‘ability’ with a proactive approach to get players to do as much as they can and to the best of their ability no matter what gender.”

If you would like to go along and support them, their next game is at Aquinas College, Stockport on Thursday 24 April.  They play in the Cheshire Ability Counts Football league.
